This Man Traveled The World For One Year On One Bitcoin
Rafael Hauxley began his travels in August of 2017 when he set off from Portland, Oregon. His mission was simple: to explore the BTC communities of the world and to make this happen with a budget of only one bitcoin. We sat down with Rafael Hauxley to learn about why he set out on this journey and, more importantly, how he did it.
Before deciding upon his quest, Rafael Hauxley has a similar relationship to
crypto as many others have experienced. "I'd heard about it way back in 2010, but I didn't get into it because I thought 'the government's going to just shut this down. It's just magic internet money,'" he explained.
Years later, "when bitcoin was above 2K, I heard about it again from a friend, and I was in a place in my life where I could devote a bit more time to researching it." During this time, Hauxley became profoundly interested and even went as far as writing a short book on bitcoin.
Next, a combination of what he describes as a “quarter-life crisis,” boredom from his architectural job led him to the ideal of his bitcoin fuelled trip. Mainly, the decision to travel the world on a one bitcoin budget came merely wanting to see if it could be done.
Hauxley received a great deal of skepticism from his family and friends when he announced his intention to travel the world on one bitcoin. "They thought that either I'd be arrested because of it or that bitcoin would plummet to zero and I'd be stuck," Hauxley told Blocklr. Though the hesitance from his loved ones was certainly understandable, the traveler went on to prove his skeptics wrong.
